Completely refinished this waste paper basket is unusual since it is round and made from expensive teak laminates.
Teak wood is a dense, close-grained type of hardwood that is sourced from the Tectona grandis tree, native to south and southeast Asia.

Original interior reveals two repairs in progress. There are also two other repairs on the exterior.
Original exterior view.
This is the first of four missing and otherwise chipped pieces from the waste paper basket. A maple veneer was cut, sanded and glued to fit. It is better to use a lighter veneer than a darker one.
Same blemish with stain. Not dark enough and more drastic measures are needed.
Woodgraining, formally known as Faux Bois, is a faux painting technique that is used to mimic the texture of wood. Using a similar techique the repair is difficult to see. Water based paints were used to hide the repair and typically 2 different colors are needed. One for the background color and one for the darker grain of the wood. Using a small stiff brush wood grain is scraped on the surface rather than brushing it on.
The second blemish was repaired the same way as the first.
Staining often does not work, but if it does you still need to cover up the repair borders.
This particular fix may need more "wood grain" painted on.
Another fix for a missing chip. Easy to cut out the veneer, but notice how it doesn't fit exactly. After the glue has dried sanding the repair smooth will prodcue enough dust to fit in the cracks. From there diluted wood glue can be forced into the cracks where the sanded wood dust lies.
The 4 repairs for this waste paper basket are actually much smaller than they look. Each is about the size of a dime.
Repairing the missing chipped pieces is important for the strength of the surrounding wood. Otherwise, small chips turn into much bigger problems over time.
Last of the four repairs needed.
It is better that this type of repair does not look like a square or rectangle. Odd shapes blend better.
Faux painting will often extend beyond the original fix. Keeping it as small as possible will yield better results. Overall, the repairs are very good semi-professional work.

Dimensions : 15 inches tall, top diameter 13 inches, bottom diameter 9 inches.
A collection of images from a vintage wood waste paper basket that seems to command a fair amount of money as of the year 2022. Difficult to tell when it was actually made, but it has been guessed that is was made during the latter part of the 1960's since Servex went out of business sometime in the early 1970's. Also known by the name Rainbow Wood Products Inc., this Swedish company made teak veneer trash cans, bowls, ice buckets and coasters since the 1950's.
The photographs make the waste paper basket look darker than it normally would in natural day light. You can zoom in on the images if you mouse over them. During autoplay zoom is disabled. Shrinking the browser window will shrink its contents possibly making it easier to view the gallery.
Valued in the range of $75 - $150.
